We are nominating Ángel’s Román for the Maytag Dependable Leaders Award in recognition of his profound and enduring impact on the youth at Boys & Girls Club of Lake County. Ángel’s unwavering dedication and exemplary leadership make him a deserving candidate for this honor. Over the past six years, he has tirelessly worked to transform the lives of countless individuals, setting them on a path towards success.
Ángel’s commitment to the well-being and development of the youth he supports is truly remarkable. His efforts extend far beyond the confines of the Club, as he goes above and beyond to ensure their safety and growth. Whether it's guiding them through potentially dangerous areas to protect them before and after programming or attending high school graduations of those he has mentored, Ángel consistently demonstrates his unwavering support.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Ángel’s leadership is his willingness to provide invaluable assistance to young individuals seeking their next steps in life. He has graciously offered countless letters of recommendation, enabling these youths to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Moreover, during moments of crisis, such as a police lockdown in the area, Angel ensures every child safely reaches home, illustrating his dedication to their well-being.
Ángel's impact on the lives of those he encounters is best exemplified through his relationship with a remarkable young man named Kyron. When Kyron first arrived at Boys & Girls Club for after-school programming at the age of 12, Ángel immediately took an interest in his development. Starting with their shared love for basketball, Ángel nurtured a strong mentorship, ensuring that Kyron was academically challenged and consistently engaged in Club activities. Knowing the challenges that awaited Kyron outside the Club, Ángel went above and beyond to ensure his safety and protect him from the influence of local gangs. He would consistently walk Kyron home after programming, providing a sense of security and emotional support. By doing so, Ángel shielded Kyron from the clutches of gang recruitment, instilling in him a sense of belonging and self-worth. Through his constant encouragement and unwavering belief in Kyron's potential, Ángel consistently reminded him, "You are going to be somebody." As a result of Ángel's guidance and support, Kyron successfully graduated from high school and enrolled in the Army National Guard, achieving a significant milestone in his life. Ángel proudly boasts that he had the opportunity to be the first to thank Kyron ‘for his service.’
Tragically, on June 8, 2023, Kyron was a victim of gun violence and passed away after being shot multiple times outside his home just a few blocks from the Club he attended. And on that day, Ángel was at Kyron's home to lend his support to the family.
Ángel's profound commitment to the betterment of the youth at BGCLC serves as an extraordinary example for all leaders within Boys & Girls Club of America. He embodies the qualities of compassion, dedication, and mentorship that every leader should strive to emulate. Angel's selfless actions and impact on countless lives make him an exceptional candidate for the Maytag Dependable Leaders Award.
